O que mais surpreende no inglês é que existem várias formas de se dizer uma mesma coisa. No dia-a-dia os falantes nativos do inglês acabam criando expressões mais informais que facilitam o entendimento.

Vamos dar um exemplo. The engineer figured out the problem (O engenheiro descobriu o problema). As palavras figure e out carregam um novo significado quando estão juntas numa frase. Ao invés de usar figure out você poderia usar discover, mas não teria a mesma informalidade da expressão figure out.

Os phrasal verbs são uma área crítica no estudo da língua inglesa. Quanto maior o conhecimento destes verbos maior será a sua compreensão do inglês, seja falado ou escrito. Existem alguns verbos que são de uso mais corriqueiro, e outros não tão comuns.

Dentre os mais comuns, podemos citar alguns (acredite, são muitos!):

To Call – chamar
Call for – exigir, requerer.
Exemplo: This work calls for a lot of patience.
Call in – convidar
Call off – cancelar
Exemplo: I’m going to call off my medical appointment because I feel much better now.
Call out – gritar para
Call up – telefonar
Exemplo: They called up the man.

To come – vir
Come across – encontrar por acaso
Come down – descer
Come in – entrar
Come off – sair, desprender-se
Come on – entrar em cena
Come out – sair
Come up – subir, surgir

To get – adquiri, obter
Get along with – dar-se bem com alguém
Get away – escapar
Get away with – safar-se
Get in – entrar
Get into – entrar
Get off – descer, apesar de
Get on – subir, montar
Get on with – continuar

To make – fazer

Make off – fugir, escapar
Make out – preencher (cheque)

Make up – inventar, criar
Exemplo: You can attend classes on Saturdays to make up for the classes you missed.

To put – pôr, colocar
Put aside – guardar, economizar
Put away – guardar, pôr no lugar

Exemplo: I think I’ll have to put off my dental appointment.
Put on – vestir

Exemplo: The firemen put out the fire.
